- Synopsis: This is a film about two men, three fish, and a bet. Two men, New Zealanders, utterly different in age, temperament, background and skills. Applejoy, the young and dashing barrister. McClure, middle-aged, tough, dour, a rough diamond. The Bet: to catch three fish, in different parts of New Zealand, in the shortest time. And there was one thing which Applejoy dismissed too lightly: that he had never caught a fish in his life, while McClure was one of the greatest fishermen New Zealand had ever produced. And there was was a thing that old McClure had missed from his calculations too: that two thousand miles of driving lay between these three fish and the winning post; and that young Applejoy was a driver of rally standard. The story which follows is a fishing film for non-fishermen, and a driving film for non-drivers - a riot of misadventures which takes us the length of New Zealand, and back again.
